While you're in the middle of some highly technical work, the president
of the company approaches you directly with a last minute request. She
owns the company, but is not your supervisor. What would you do?
Explain that you are unable to help now but after
closing you would be willing to stay on.
Tell her to talk to your supervisor.
Start in on the work right away and put the other
project on hold.
Sometimes this might seem like the
best move, but more often than not it creates stress for you, and it may
set a precedent that you're not comfortable with. Try again.
This is a wise move as your boss probably
knows the status of the work going on around you, and may be able to find
someone else to help during regular hours.
Not the best route. It would be better
to let the president know the complicated nature of what you're doing,
and ask her to talk to your supervisor about other options for her request.
Try again.
