At the crossroads of technology and culture, the Montreal-based company Scéno-Plus offers integrated services in architecture, theatre design, specialized equipment, and project management. Serge Cormier, Director of Specialized Equipment, has a multifaceted job - today he may work as a site supervisor, tomorrow as a team coordinator. His responsibility is to make sure everything runs smoothly in a business where delays can cost thousands of dollars.

Building systems technologists' mission in life is to make buildings habitable, comfortable, and profitable. They take care of all of the mechanical aspects of building maintenance. Sometimes they draw up plans and design systems as well. Serge, 37, is familiar with every aspect of the job.

As a manager at Scéno-Plus, he serves as the "conductor" of the Specialized Equipment Department. In addition to handling administrative details such as budgeting and human resources, he coordinates the design of specialized technical systems. "I supervise the work of a long chain of designers of electrical infrastructures - lighting and sound specialists, for example - rigging, film, and video projection specialists, and communications experts," he explains.

Serge is also expected to oversee the completion of drawings and specifications, as well as to supervise the installation and implementation of projects. "I need to build in all these different concepts on the site. In other words, I make sure that the concepts we develop get to the site at the right time, and that everything is properly coordinated with the various professionals involved. In a way, I'm a bridge between equipment design and construction."

This is a man who clearly loves his job. "Creating facilities that are tailor-made for the artists and theatre people is a real passion for me," Serge says.
