Robert Santo likes to build in places that most people try to avoid: swamps, marshes, and other wet areas. The reason is simple. Robert, a Civil Engineering Technologist, works for Ducks Unlimited Canada, a conservation group committed to saving and creating wetlands where North American waterfowl can live and thrive.

Robert, 47, is the Manager of Field Operations for north-central Saskatchewan. As a manager, his work involves developing short- and long-term plans for wetland conservation, which means, for example, finding an area where people are open to preserving wetlands, developing a project, and deciding if canals or dikes might need to be built to ensure enough water for the area.

Robert is also responsible for budgets, maintaining costs on projects, projecting annual budgets, and overseeing the work of people in three separate offices.

"I spend about 50 percent of my time on the phone and the other 50 percent on the computer," Robert jokes. His office is located in Melfort, Saskatchewan, a small town of about 7,000 people, sitting some 100 miles north-east of Saskatoon.
