Created in 1982, CTAB is a standing committee of the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists (CCTT). CTAB strives to promote excellence in technical education across Canada by furthering the standards used to certify individual technicians and technologists and by the National Accreditation Program, which is used to evaluate postsecondary applied science and engineering technology programs. National accreditation is carried out jointly by CTAB and CCTT provincial Constituent Member associations and societies, representing over 40,000 certified engineering and applied science technicians and technologists.
CTAB includes representatives from the provincial associations and societies, the Department of National Defence (DND), the Canadian Technology Human Resource Board (CTHRB), the Canadian Society for Chemical Technology (CSCT) and the National Council of Deans of Technology (NCDOT). Additional technology educators participate as observers.
